Zymergen is harnessing the transformative power of biology using robots and machine learning to catalyze a new industrial renaissance. They needed a new brand category, story, and identity to highlight their radical undertaking.

Zymergen wanted to distance itself from biotech, which was too limiting from a valuations perspective, and synthetic biology, which failed to capture their differentiated application of machine learning and its ability to produce at scale. Partnering with the team at Wolff Olins, we got under the skin of the business and created a new category, Molecular Technology, that captures Zymergen’s unique integration of molecular science, machine learning, and high-throughput automation.

Equipped with a new category, we then helped Zymergen articulate an external-facing brand story of science, sustainability, and scale to convey a compelling value proposition to investors and top talent.

From this foundation, the team developed a new visual language inspired by the intersection of leading-edge technology, autonomous robots and mutable microbes.
